How to Set up ActiveSync on Your Smartphone

Synopsis:
MailSite Fusion includes the ability to sync email, calendars and contacts to mobile devices including Windows Mobile, iPhone 2.0 and Nokia smartphones. Use this document as a guide to setup your device. Typically this is best suited for IMAP accounts, rather than POP accounts.

The instructions below are designed to reflect what the settings look like on smartphone. Some variations however may apply to different models.

Windows Mobile Devices

Smartphones running Windows Mobile 5 with Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) service pack or Windows Mobile 6.

Windows Mobile 6

  • Open the ActiveSync application on the smartphone usually found under Start > Programs > ActiveSync
  • Click Menu and select ‘Add Server Source’
  • Enter the full email address you wish to sync e.g. test@example.com
  • Deselect ‘Attempt to detect Exchange Server Settings automatically’. Press ‘Next’
  • Enter the server address this is the domain name of the server but NOT the virtual directory name, e.g. mail.domain.com
  • Choose whether this is a SSL encrypted connection or not. Press ‘Next’
  • Enter the mailbox name, password and domain of the account you wish to sync. Select to save your password for automatic sync. Press ‘Next’
  • Select the services you wish to sync from Contacts, Calendars and Email. Do NOT select tasks as these are not yet supported. Press ‘Finish’

Windows Mobile 5 with MSFP

  • Open the ActiveSync application on the smartphone usually found under Start > Programs > ActiveSync
  • Click Menu and select ‘Add Server Source’
  • Enter the server address this is the domain name of the server but NOT the virtual directory name, e.g. mail.domain.com
  • Choose whether this is a SSL encrypted connection or not. Press ‘Next’
  • Enter the mailbox name, password and domain of the account you wish to sync. Select to save your password for automatic sync. Press ‘Next’
  • Select the services you wish to sync from Contacts, Calendars and Email. Do NOT select tasks as these are not yet supported. Press ‘Finish’

Under the Messaging application use Tools > Manage Folders to specify other folders than the Inbox to sync to your device.

Under ActiveSync Menu > Options highlight the component e.g. Email and click Settings to specify further sync features.

iPhone 2.0

ActiveSync settings are only available on the iPhone 2.0

  • Go to the Home Screen > Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then select Microsoft Exchange
  • Complete the Account Settings with your email address e.g user@example.com, username e.g example.com\user and password. Give this a description and press Next.
  • Enter the server address e.g. mail.domain.com and press Next
  • Choose what you wish to synchronize on the phone out of mail, contacts or calendars or all of these. Tap Save.

The iPhone defaults to use SSL on the account you setup. If you wish to turn SSL off you need to enter the connection details above and let the connection to the server fail.

You can then go into Home > Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select your account. Then choose Account Info > Edit . Set 'use SSL' to OFF and tap 'save'.

Nokia Smartphone

Mail for Exchange on Nokia E series smartphone utilizes ActiveSync. The Mail for Exchange client enables wireless synchronization.

  • Install or open Mail for Exchange on your device. Create a new profile
  • Go to Connection > Exchange Server and specify the mail server address e.g. mail.domain.com
  • Under Secure Connection choose Yes to use SSL. This is recommended.
  • Go to Credentials and enter your username, password and domain to access your email account.
  • Go to Sync Content and select the services you wish to sync from Contacts, Calendars and Email.
