Installing IIS (Internet Information Services)

Synopsis:
This document details how to install IIS on Windows. IIS is required for the Webmail, Calendar and ActiveSync components of MailSite.

More Information:
Windows 2003 default installation configuration does not install IIS 6.0 by default. To install IIS:

Installing IIS 6

  • Click on the start button.
  • Select settings then control panel.
  • Select ADD/Remove programs.
  • Click ADD/Remove Windows components.
  • Double click on Application server.
  • Click on Internet Information Services.
  • IIS should install after you click OK, be sure to enable ASP as per the following section.
In order to get MailSite Express operational Using ASP, follow the steps below:
  • Click on the start button.
  • Select settings then control panel.
  • Select ADD/Remove programs.
  • Click ADD/Remove Windows components.
  • Double click on Application server.
  • Next double click on Internet Information Services.
  • Next double click on World Wide Web Service.
  • Select the Active Server Pages option.
  • Install or enable your express installation, it should now work as expected.
IIS 7.0 is not installed by default on Windows Server 2008. You can install IIS using the Server Manager.

Installing IIS 7.0

  • Click Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager.
  • Right click on Roles from the tree on the left then choose Add Roles.
  • The Add Roles Wizard will appear. Click Next.
  • From the Select Server Roles window, click the box beside the Web Server (IIS) option. Click Next.
  • Click Next.
  • The next window is the Select Role Services.
    • Tick to install 'Common HTTP Features' and 'Application Development' so that this includes all their sub options.
    • Under 'Health and Diagnostics' tick 'HTTP Logging' and 'Request Monitor'.
    • Under 'Security' tick Basic Authentication, 'Windows Authentication' and 'Request Filtering'.
    • Under 'Performance' tick 'Static Content Compression.
    • Under 'Management Tools' tick 'IIS Management Console'
  • Click Next
  • Verify your chosen options on the next screen then press Install.
  • After installation you should see the Installation Results page. Click Close to finish the process.
  • In the Server Manager window, under Roles Summary, you should now see Web Server (IIS).
  • ASP.Net 4.0 is required for MailSite 9.5 and later. You should install the full version of the 4.0 .Net Framework, which is available from the Microsoft website.
